The Hillsborough Arts Council is seeking up to 8 featured Artist Members to participate in a unique community art project in partnership with Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity.
Selected artists will each create an original artwork on a section of a commercial-grade door that will be displayed at Bridgewater Commons Mall as part of a public awareness campaign supporting Habitat for Humanity's mission of building homes, communities, and hope.
Artists are invited to create artwork that reflects the meaning of home, community, belonging, connection, and the impact a safe and stable home can have on individuals and families.
Each artist will be assigned a (as small as 18" x 18") section of the door and will work within the overall collaborative design concept.
This project offers artists the opportunity to showcase their creativity while helping raise awareness for an organization that transforms lives through affordable housing and community support.
Selected artists will receive:
Public visibility through a high-traffic display at Bridgewater Commons Mall
Recognition through Hillsborough Arts Council and Habitat for Humanity promotional channels
Artist feature content on the Habitat for Humanity website
Opportunity to share your website and social media links with the public
Participation in a meaningful community art initiative supporting a local nonprofit mission
Applicants must be current Hillsborough Arts Council Artist Members
Artists must be available to paint on-site during the project timeline
Artists must be willing to submit website content about their artwork and creative inspiration
Artists must adhere to project guidelines and deadlines
June 30 - Application Opens
Applications will be accepted through the Hillsborough Arts Council online application form.
July 13 - Application Deadline
July 15 - Artist Selection Announcement
Selected artists will be notified by email. Additional opportunities may become available if a second door is added to the project.
July 17 - Design Concept Submission Due
Artists will be asked to submit a brief concept or sketch describing their proposed artwork.
The purpose of this review is to ensure all artwork aligns with the project's theme and mission. If needed, artists may be asked to make minor adjustments before painting begins.
Artists who do not follow project guidelines or submit required materials may be disqualified from participation.
July 18 - Painting Schedule Sign-Up Opens
Artists will receive access to scheduling information and available painting time slots.
July 20 – September 6 - Painting Period
The door will be stored at the Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity location: 285 US-202 #206, Bedminster, NJ 07921
Painting sessions may be scheduled throughout the project period and may be rescheduled due to weather or other circumstances.
Artists are asked to be respectful of the work created by fellow participants. If any issues, accidents, or concerns arise, please contact: programs@hbartscouncil.org
September 1 - Website Content Due
Each artist must submit content for the Habitat for Humanity - Let's Open the Door website that includes:
Artist biography
Description of the artwork
Reflection on what "home" means to them
Website and social media links (optional but encouraged)
September 14 - Artist Features Published
Artist profiles and project stories will be featured on the Habitat for Humanity website.
September 7 - Door Installation (subject to project completion and installation scheduling)
The completed door will be prepared for installation and public display at Bridgewater Commons Mall.
